Sleep Apnea and Breathing

Posted on March 26th, 2010 by Tom Dewell  |  No Comments »

imageObstructive sleep apnea is also called sleep apnea. Obstructive means there is something that is blocking your airway when you lie down to sleep. If you find it difficult to sleep, that you are gasping for breath, and you are always snoring, a sleep machine could give you results that you need to get the rest you need without interrupting your breathing patterns. The airway passages that are sealed or partially sealed as you sleep cause you to stop breathing. As you stop breathing you are adding stress on your heart, on your body and you will not feel rested in the morning.

All About Baby Sleeping Aids

imageSometimes, it is better to invest in baby sleeping aids. There are many different kinds of toys that and products specifically designed to help babies count sheep. One of the most effective is an automatic rocker. The rocker is mechanical in nature and helps a baby to relax by swinging exactly 60 rhythms per second. The speed is adjustable. Most of these products are pediatrics certified as they adhere to the natural cyclic rotations that the baby is used to inside a mother’s womb. Another effective product is a motorized cradle or a bassinet which actually provides constant thrusting motion like a washing machine. New-born really like the oscillatory motions which help them fall asleep quickly. There are many instances in which young moms put a baby in child seat on top of a washing machine. Never do it! It is unsafe. Also, due to the inquisite nature of babies to investigate their surroundings, they develop a natural tendency to be attracted to such products. When they are able to walk, they will come back to examine the washing machine. It is also a good idea to buy music that is designed for toddlers. Music in natural tones such as water splashing, wind blowing or another natural phenomenon is more likely to soothe the baby’s nerve. Apart from the mechanical device, a pacifier is always an excellent choice. Parents are told not to use pacifiers as it gets difficult to get rid of the habit, but nothing is farther from truth. Pacifier is the single most useful invention designed for children. Had it been a problem, it would never be successful in the first place. Parents use it because it has proven itself, time and time again. Yes, over-reliance is bad but than excess of everything is bad. Isn’t it?

WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT? MAKE SURE YOU’RE GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP

Posted on January 11th, 2010 by Tom Dewell  |  No Comments »

imageOne of the most important factors that will determine how successful you are at losing weight is whether you are getting consistent, quality sleep. Studies have shown that overall, people who get under seven hours of sleep per night nearly always end up with a higher body mass index (BMI) than people who sleep seven to eight hours. Those who get less than six hours a night tend to have even higher BMIs, and among those who get under five hours, it is higher still. One of the explanations for this relationship between less sleep and higher BMI is that daytime fatigue can have an impact on the way you eat. Fatigue can be misinterpreted as hunger, and it an also add to stress, which is proven to prompt people to overeat. Poor sleep can also have a significant effect on your metabolism. To make matters worse, people who are overweight or obese may have lower quality sleep, often due to snoring or sleep apnea or because of an underactive metabolism. As a result, the problem ends up being a “vicious circle”: Poor sleep leads to weight gain and weight gain means poor sleep. There are a number of strategies you can use to improve your sleep patterns if they are a factor in preventing you from losing weight. There are a number of prescription and non-prescription sleep aids available, however these can be habit-forming and they are generally not a good long-term solution. A better option is an herbal preparation like Valerian root, which is not addictive and can be used on a regular basis. Valerian can be taken as an herbal tea or as a pill, but some people find that they experience side-effects such as nausea and upset stomach. Give it a try, and if it is leading to unpleasant side-effects, try another option. A second natural herbal solution is Camomile tea, which has the advantage of tasting better than Valerian, although it is not quite as powerful a sleep-inducer. It can be effective, however, at simply reducing night-time stress and putting you in the mood for sleep. If over-the-counter sleep aids do not work for you, you may want to explore the option of spending the night in a “sleep lab” that may be able to diagnose a particular sleep disorder than needs medical attention. This option is expensive, but your health insurance may cover it if it is recommended by your physician.
